We have come up with a guide to some of the most iconic spots in Iceland that are perfect for Instagram and selfies.

Iceland: the ideal destination for those seeking escapism from the hubbub of daily life and the perfect place to view nature’s most beautiful creations. From tourist favourites to lesser-known treasures off the beaten track, there are never-ending opportunities for the perfect Insta-snap. If you are in search of the perfect shot, we have put together a guide to some of the most iconic spots in Iceland, from dramatic waterfalls to stunning beaches, to help you make your feed the best it can be.

Gullfoss

Iceland is renowned for its countless waterfalls, so many in fact that some are not even named! Although you might be looking for some great spots that aren’t heaving with tourists, Gullfoss is a must. This iconic natural landmark descends in two stages and features the country’s second biggest glacier - no wonder it’s Iceland’s most visited waterfall.  Easily accessible from the Golden Circle, you are guaranteed an Insta-perfect shot no matter your angle, so be sure to add it to your trip’s agenda. You might even catch a rainbow on sunnier days.

Secret Lagoon

If you are travelling to Iceland, then you have no doubt heard about the infamous Blue Lagoon. Although it is essential for your trip to Iceland, it is often packed with tourists and probably the most Instagrammed spot in the country. If you are looking for something a little more secluded and unknown, then the Secret Lagoon is the perfect destination for you. Dating back to 1891, it offers the amazing chance to bathe in a natural hot spring – something the Blue Lagoon is not. Located in the village of Fludir, near the Golden Circle track, for those of you visiting in the winter it provides the perfect backdrop for viewing and photographing, the spectacular Northern Lights.

Dyrhólaey

Although you might be surprised to see a humble peninsula on our list, this single destination offers a multitude of photo opportunities. The stone-arch rock formation along in the coastline and jet-black sand beach are just a couple of the picturesque landscapes just waiting to be added to your feed. You can also find a rather unique, castle-like lighthouse on the coastline, if you trek to the upper part of Dyrhólaey, and be sure to take a selfie with one of the many puffins you are likely to encounter too.

Jökulsárlón

If you want to feel like you’re in the North Pole, without having to travel there, then you have to visit Jökulsárlón. With stunning glaciers and crystal-clear ice, it is no wonder that it has been the background for many Hollywood blockbusters, from James Bond’s Die Another Day to Batman Begins. Located in the southeast of Iceland, it features a glacial lake, where giant pieces of ice break off and often float ashore. You might also be lucky to spot some wildlife in the region, with seals often in the area.

Reynisdrangar

Striking black sand beaches and rock formations are often associated with the village of Vik, but some of the best photos are just down the road. Reynisdrangar, or Reynisfjara, Beach is one of the most popular photo opportunities on the island, with stunning views and a dark coastline perfect for moody, often eerie, photos. There are also basalt rock formations that jut out of the beach, to make your photos even more spectacular. According to Icelandic legend, there is a tale that the stones are actually two trolls that were turned to stone at first daylight. A great secluded spot, with very few tourists, it is the perfect location for taking pictures uninterrupted.

Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to capturing Iceland’s beauty: there are plenty more locations around the country that are also worth a visit. A roadtrip can be a great way to catch a glimpse of the best and lesser-seen spots in Iceland, such as the road from Reykjavik to Akureyri. However, getting to these gorgeous spots can be a challenge, so make sure to choose the perfect rental car to make your trip that bit easier.
